Sooner is Safer Than Later
نویسنده
چکیده
It has been observed repeatedly that the standard safety-liveness classi cation for properties of reactive systems does not t for real-time properties. This is because the implicit \liveness" of time shifts the spectrum towards the safety side. While, for example, response | that \something good" will happen eventually | is a classical liveness property, bounded response | that \something good" will happen soon, within a certain amount of time | has many characteristics of safety. We account for this phenomenon formally by de ning safety and liveness relative to a given condition, such as the progress of time.

A Reinforcement Learning Model of Precommitment in Decision Making
Addiction and many other disorders are linked to impulsivity, where a suboptimal choice is preferred when it is immediately available. One solution to impulsivity is precommitment: constraining one's future to avoid being offered a suboptimal choice. A form of impulsivity can be measured experimentally by offering a choice between a smaller reward delivered sooner and a larger reward delivered ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Behavior Commitment Using Punishment Leonard Green and Howard Rachlin
Experimental parameters were adjusted so that pigeons' pairwise choices among three alternatives reflected the following order of preference: (a) a smaller-sooner reinforcer, (b) a larger-later reinforcer, and (c) the smaller-sooner reinforcer followed by a punishment (consisting of an extended blackout period). After this order of preference was established, the pigeons were exposed to a twoli...

متن کاملDo students think that difficult or valuable materials should be restudied sooner rather than later?
Despite the clear long-term benefits of spaced practice, students and teachers often choose massed practice. Whether learners actually fail to appreciate the benefits of spacing is, however, open to question. Early studies (e.g., Zechmeister & Shaughnessy, 1980) found that participants' judgments of learning were higher after massed than after spaced repetitions, but more recent studies have fo...
متن کاملDRIFT: an analysis of outcome framing in intertemporal choice.
People prefer to receive good outcomes immediately rather than wait, and they must be compensated for waiting. But what influences their decision about how much compensation is required for a given wait? To give a partial answer to this question, we develop the DRIFT model, a heuristic description of how framing influences intertemporal choice. We describe 4 experiments showing the implications...
